TrimUI Brick Is A High-Resolution Miniature Game Boy

One of our very favorite budget devices is getting a vertical, pocket-friendly companion.

One of our very favorite budget devices is getting a companion, with TrimUI announcing a brand new device alongside its increasingly popular Smart Pro.

The company has announced the TrimUI Brick in a video on Bilibili. It will come with the same Allwinner A133 Plus chip that powers the Smart Pro, giving it plenty of power to emulate PlayStation 1 and older systems, as well as some N64, PSP, and limited Dreamcast emulation. The Brick also runs on Linux, meaning the community-developed OS upgrades Crossmix, KNULLI, and Tomato OS should work on Day 1.

The sleek and minimalist design is really selling this one, with clean lines and white and black colorways that appear to be inspired by the Analogue Pocket. The Brick will also come with an eye-catching ambient light on the top back.

That 3.2-inch IPS screen is also boasting an astonishingly high resolution for a device this size: 1024×768 pixels. That’s 400 pixels per inch, which might be a record for a pocket-friendly mini handheld. It will make for excellent upscaling with the older systems the Brick is capable of playing.

With a 3.2-inch screen the Brick will be larger than the original Miyoo Mini (which is the size of a deck of cards, with its 2.8-inch screen) but smaller than the Miyoo Mini+ and Anbernic’s RG35XX (both of which have 3.5-inch displays). That seems to be the sweet spot for pocketable retro devices, and the lack of analog sticks — though it will present a challenge to some N64 and Dreamcast titles — will also help with its pocketability.
