AYN Going Bigger With the Odin2 Portal
The popular Odin 2 line is getting a brand new device, with a 7-inch AMOLED display.
Android gaming handheld maker AYN will iterate on the popular Odin 2 with its next device. Announced today is the AYN Odin2 Portal, running the same horsepower but with a larger, AMOLED display and a new design aesthetic.
The Odin2 Portal sets itself apart with its bigger size: a 7-inch display with a 120 Hz refresh rate, larger than the Odin 2’s 6-inch screen and even getting close to the Steam Deck’s 7.4 inches. It also has an all-glass front, a first for the Shenzhen-based company.
The Portal will be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, capable of emulating pretty much everything currently available for Android (up through the Nintendo Switch). Odin 2 owners have reported that with this much emulation power the software currently available for Android becomes the real performance bottleneck. So expect the Portal to do great with PlayStation 2, Game Cube and Wii, and Switch emulation — insofar as the emulators themselves are compatible with the games.
Check out the launch video:
The device was originally announced with the name “Odin Portal” (as seen in the video), but the company quickly updated it to “Odin2 Portal” — presumably to make it clear that this is not a next-generation device, but rather a new entry in the Odin 2 line. The most recent device from AYN is the Odin2 Mini, which launched in June with the same processor but in a smaller, 5-inch form factor.
While the Mini sports a “MiniLED” touch screen, the Portal will come equipped with an AMOLED panel — also a first for AYN. The all-glass front is also reminiscent of the forthcoming Retroid Pocket 5, as well as recent devices from competitor AYANEO. And the Portal’s large intake on the back of the device suggests an aggressive cooling profile, which is friendly to higher performance. AYN also says that the device will be built with hall-effect analog thumbsticks.
AYN has yet to announcing pricing or a target release date for the Odin2 Portal, but AYANEO’s Pocket EVO seems to be its closest competitor. That device also has a 7-inch OLED screen and an all-glass front, and will be powered by the Snapdragon G3x Gen 2. The Pocket EVO is aiming for a November release.
The original Odin 2 currently sells for $299 to $459 (depending on the memory and RAM configuration), while the Odin2 Mini costs $339 to $399. If the Odin2 Portal comes in around $400, AYN may have another winner on their hands.
