Miyoo Flip: Sneak a Peek at 2024’s Most Anticipated Pocket Device

A new video leak shows Miyoo’s pocket clamshell device in the wild.

Miyoo’s much-anticipated clamshell gaming device is coming along nicely, with a new video popping up online that shows a prototype of the device in the wild.

The fact that this device is in development was first uncovered in patent filings in 2022 and 2023, which showed a clamshell handheld in a rainbow of colors — evidently in order to clearly distinguish its components for the filing, and not because Miyoo is actually planning to release a pastel Frankenstein:

The new 16-second video shows a device with a black shell and green and gray buttons. It was posted on the website bilibili after a customer also posted a photo of the device that Miyoo’s official store on AliExpress shared in response to an inquiry. Take a look at the video over on reddit.

The prototype is running the familiar Miyoo operating system. It has dual analog sticks set into the shell, and the on-screen menu implies wifi support … though of course we’ll have to wait on Miyoo to announce the actual components later this year.

The Miyoo Flip’s clamshell design is clearly inspired by Nintendo’s 2003 Game Boy Advance SP, a popular foldable handheld that sold some 43 million units. PowKiddy also released its own square clamshell in 2020, with the PowKiddy V90.

Hopefully Miyoo’s device will outperform the V90, which has an Allwinner SOC that struggles to play even some SNES titles. RetroBreeze speculates that the presence of dual analog sticks alone implies a more powerful chip, as this control scheme would be wasted on a device that cannot emulate much of anything above the original PlayStation.

So when will we see the new device? In showing off the upcoming Miyoo A30 the “Miyoo Mini Stock Alerts” Twitter account mentioned Miyoo’s clamshell device as well, noting that the Flip will be released sometime after the A30. That one is a horizontal device, which will be released in April.
